Writing a cover letter for a remote job application is a bit different than you might be used to. The hiring manager wants to know that you’ll be able to deliver value even if you’re not supervised. Think like a salesperson and tell employers what you will do for them. We recommend highlighting the following areas in your cover letter.

  1. Do you already have remote work experience? If so, start with that. Describe what you did remotely and how it added value for your employer. Always focus on the value to the employer! For example: “My last job as a content marketer was fully remote. I created exciting digital presentations and compelling email copy for sales campaigns. I delivered a full campaign each week, based on just one videoconference with my manager every Monday. I never missed a deadline!”
  2. If you don’t already have remote work experience, it’s ok! Think about a time you took the initiative and made something happen without a lot of management. That’s really the core skill for remote work — delivering value without being told what to do every day. Describe a story in which you did something like that. Maybe your boss went on vacation and you took the lead on something, or you decided to go above and beyond on an assignment without anyone telling you to. Show the hiring manager that you are a go-getter!

3. Write about your time management skills. Remote managers want people who can focus on the work, but we all know it can be difficult when you’re at home. What’s your strategy for tuning out the distractions? Perhaps you have a home office with a door that you close, or maybe you block out 4 hours every morning — no email, no phone, just work. Describe how you manage your own time to maximize productivity… and deliver value to your employer.

4. Tell a real story in your cover letter. For example, anyone can say “I’m good at time management”. You’ll make it much stronger if you prove it with a story about when you managed your time under pressure to meet a tight deadline.

In Conclusion

Remember, always focus the cover letter on how you bring value to the employer. That’s why they hire people in the first place. The cover letter is your chance to tell employers about your great skills and characteristics AND how they will enable you to deliver a lot of great value.
