3 Tips for Getting a Remote Job
- Proofread and spell check all of your written work.
Resume, cover letter, work samples, emails to and from the recruiter… take an extra 5 minutes to make sure it’s PERFECT. In a remote job, you’ll have to communicate in writing a lot. You won’t be in the same office with your colleagues, so you’ll be sending documents back and forth. Companies usually don’t even bother to interview people who send anything with typos. Show the recruiter that you care about the quality of your writing!
2. Be low-maintenance.
It’s just too much of a pain to deal with high-maintenance people in a remote company. They get stalled, just like difficult people in the office, but it’s not as obvious because they are not in the office together. No one finds out there’s a problem until it’s too late and deadlines are missed. Therefore, remote managers look for people who FIGURE IT OUT. If there’s something confusing about the interview process, figure it out. Resist the temptation to ask the stupid question! Companies love hiring people who didn’t cause any trouble during the interview process. They don’t hire people who email 3 times asking if they have to use Zoom, or how they can prepare, or other foolishness.
3. Get the tech right.
Duh, you say?
We’d say that too, if we didn’t see somebody every week who can’t get the video going. And somebody whose audio isn’t working. And somebody who is having “connection issues”. Work all of that out BEFORE the interview! Remote companies rarely hire people who couldn’t be bothered to test their webcam, audio, and connection before the interview. This is such a needless problem, but so many people make themselves look stupid with technical difficulties. It’s a remote job! Videoconferencing is a required basic skill.
